Nigerian students killed in their sleep by Boko Haram gunmen

At least 40 Nigerian students were killed in their sleep on Sunday as suspected members of the Islamist sect Boko Haram opened fire in a college’s dormitories in the middle of the night.

Rescue workers and family members gather to identify the shrouded bodies of students

Rescue workers and family members gather to identify the shrouded bodies of students killed following an attack by Islamist extremist on an agricultural college in Gujba, Nigeria.

The gunmen also torched classrooms during the attack on Yobe State College of Agriculture in the far north-east of the country, officials said.
The incident follows a spate of similar attacks by the al-Qaeda linked extremist group, who have become notorious for attacks on schools and universities, which it regards as a symbol of Western culture.
Boko Haram, whose name means “Western education is a sin”, has carried out gun and bomb attacks across Nigeria’s mainly Muslim north and the capital, Abuja, killing thousands of people since 2009 in its campaign to establish an Islamic state in Nigeria.

Yobe State, where the agricultural college is located, is one of three currently under military control after President Goodluck Jonathan declared a state of emergency throughout the north-east of the country in mid-May following an escalation in violence.
Military spokesman Lazarus Eli confirmed that the attack was carried out by “Boko Haram terrorists”, who entered the school and opened fire on sleeping students at around 1.00am on Sunday.

Wizkid throws 100k into crowd, causes stampede at Felabration

Wizkid performs at Felabration 2013 copy

When you visit a zoo, you often see the sign ‘Don’t feed the animals’. And even when you don’t, some basic instinct just tells you not to…

Wizkid caused a stampede at the New Afrika Shrine that lasted close to 30 minutes and interestingly, it had nothing to do with his performance.

The Pop star had just wrapped up his thrilling performance at about 3:26AM when he asked his manager Godwin Tom to hand him two bale of N500 notes supposedly around the sum of N100,000. Wizkid then threw the money into the crowd and left the stage.

Wizzy and his entourage immediately left the venue without the knowledge of the near-disaster he had caused as fans in the crowded general public area proceeded to hound themselves over a few thousands of Naira. The fight for the N500 notes amongst the crowd couldn’t be controlled by the stage security. In fact security guards joined in the fight for the money.

The fight led to a stampede and lasted for another 30 minutes. It had to take the intervention of more security officials and show host Omobaba who pleaded for the crowd to be calm.

34 percent of Nigerians believe indecent dressing is main cause of rape

The NOI Polls on October 11, released results from its poll carried out on January 22, 2013, in commemoration of the International Day of the Girl Child.
The organisation’s report reads that, “On December 19, 2011, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 66/170 to declare 11 October as the International Day of the Girl Child, to recognise girls’ rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world.
NOI Pollsindecent dressing 1

The theme for this year’s celebration, “Innovating for girls’ education,” focuses on smart and creative use of technology, policies, partnerships and, most of all, the engagement of young people, themselves, as important tools for overcoming barriers to girls’ learning and achievement.
“In order to commemorate this event and honour the girl child this special day, NOI Polls Limited released one of the polls we conducted in the first quarter of the year 2013, which was focused on the challenges faced by the girl child in Nigeria and indeed the world over as a result of the incidence of rape among women in the society.
“The results released by NOIPolls Limited revealed that almost 3 in 10 Nigerians admitted to personally knowing someone who has been a victim of rape; citing stigmatisation as the main reason why many rape cases go unreported. The poll conducted on January 22, 2013 which sampled over 500 Nigerians across the six geo-political zones of the country, also urged the government to create public awareness against rape.”
Participants in the poll were asked six questions:

1. To what extent is rape predominant in the Nigerian society?
Majority of the participants, with 38 percent, believed that rape was predominant to a little extent; 29 percent said rape was predominant to a little extent; 23 percent said rape was predominant to a very little extent; 9 percent said it was predominant to a very large extent and one percent said that they believed rape was not at all predominant in Nigeria.

Overall, 99 percent of the participants believed that rape was predominant in Nigeria to varying degrees.

2. Do you personally know anyone that has been a victim of rape?
Close to three out of ten of the participants, with 29 percent, said they knew a person who had been a victim of rape; the majority of them with 68 percent, however, said that they did not personally know any rape victims, and three percent refused to answer the question.

3. What do you think is the prevalent cause of rape in the society?
34 percent of the participants believed that indecent dressing was the main cause of rape in the society; 18 percent believed unemployment was the cause; nine percent believed it was caused by lack of moral values and another nine percent believed it was caused by the inability to control sexual urges; seven percent said it was caused by faulty upbringing. Five percent of the participants believed rape was caused by illiteracy about women’s rights, ungodliness and bad company.

The report went on to state that the participants were asked open-ended questions and were allowed to give their own answers to the questions; as such, the organisers found the popularity of the indecent dressing factor rather troubling.

“This finding throws some light on a recent article by Amaka Okafor-Vanni in the Guardian newspaper UK titled ‘Nigeria has a rape culture too’. In the article, the author argued that if the India rape incident had taken place in Nigeria, nothing would have been done about it. Stressing that societal values suggest that a lady “must be told what to wear (or not wear) to limit the exposure to the men and when she doesn’t conform, and is assaulted or arrested, then she is responsible. In other words, if a woman’s body is visible, it ought to be available for sex or punished for this visibility.”

4. Do you agree that the majority of rape cases in Nigeria go unreported?
79 percent of the participants agreed that most rape cases in Nigeria were not reported while 15 percent disagreed and six percent refused to respond.

5. The 79 percent of the participants, who believed that rape cases went unreported were asked, “Why do you think the majority of rape cases go unreported?
36 percent believed that it was because the victims did not want to be stigmatised; 29 percent believed that it was because their families were trying to avoid disgrace; 16 percent said it was because the families did not believe that justice would be gotten; nine percent believed that it was because most victims were blamed for the abuse and five percent said it was because most victims were traumatised.

“These responses suggest that majority of rape cases go unreported due to pressures that seek to compel women to remain silent about rape in order to conform to the expected societal standards of women remaining chaste till marriage.

Similarly, the findings buttress recent media reports credited to Lagos lawyer, Festus Keyamo, stating that “the problem hindering prosecution of rape was the lack of desire by the victims to pursue the case to a logical conclusion… it is one thing to allege being raped and it is another to make a report and proceed with the prosecution of the offence.” As a result, the courts have become handicapped because victims and their families fail to report rape offences,” the report read.

6. What do you think the government should do to reduce the incidence of rape?
33 percent of the participants said the government should create public awareness against rape; 32 percent said the government should enforce the existing rape laws; 13 percent said the government should encourage the report of rape cases and nine percent said the government should promote the non stigmatisation of victims.

The report also stated that, “it is clear from the poll that rape is prevalent in Nigeria, despite the fact that majority of the cases go unreported. However, these findings highlight a serious societal problem requiring urgent attention from the government, human rights groups, CSOs, NGOs and religious bodies.

Although there’s no information on Nigeria featured in the UN rape statistics by country; this is a convenient smokescreen to bury the flurry of unreported rape cases taking place yearly in the country.

The government is therefore advised to take measures to reduce the incidence of rape, and aggressively enforcing existing rape laws. Also, rights groups, CSOs and NGOs are encouraged to create public awareness against rape, promote non-stigmatisation of victims and encourage the reporting of rape cases.”
This poll involved telephone interviews with 585 randomly selected Nigerians across the six geo-political zones, who have attained the legal age.

Scars On Mars

Image Caption: The details of the central mesa inside Hebes Chasma are seen in close-up detail in this perspective view. A horseshoe-shaped chunk has been taken out of one side of the mound (left in this image); the material has slumped down onto the floor of the valley below. A dark patch appears to pool like spilt ink across the debris. It is most likely loose material that has slid down the walls from an intermediate layer. Melted ice could have played a role by weakening the rocks to create its flow-like appearance. Along the side of the mound fine horizontal layering is seen. The layers likely comprise a mix of wind-blown dust and ancient lake sediments, along with remnants of the older plateau. Credit: ESA/DLR/FU Berlin (G. Neukum)

ESA
Ripped apart by tectonic forces, Hebes Chasma and its neighboring network of canyons bear the scars of the Red Planet’s early history.
ESA’s Mars Express has flown over this region of Mars on numerous occasions, but this new eight-image mosaic reveals Hebes Chasma in full and in greater detail than ever.

Hebes Chasma is an enclosed, almost 8 km-deep trough stretching 315 km in an east–west direction and 125 km from north to south at its widest point. It sits about 300 km north of the vast Valles Marineris canyon complex.
The origin of Hebes Chasma and neighboring canyons is associated with the nearby volcanic Tharsis Region, home to the largest volcano in the Solar System, Olympus Mons.

As the Tharsis bulge swelled with magma during the planet’s first billion years, the surrounding crust was stretched, eventually ripping apart and collapsing into gigantic troughs, including Hebes Chasma. Intricate fault patterns can be seen all around the deep depression – they are especially evident in the main color and 3D images.

In the center of Hebes Chasma, there is a flat-topped ‘mesa’ that rises to level similar to that of the surrounding plains.
No other canyon on Mars has a similar feature and its origin is not entirely clear. Its layers include volcanic materials – just like in the main canyon walls – but also wind-blow dust and lake sediments that were laid down over time.

A horseshoe-shaped chunk has been taken out of one side of the mesa, seen below, where material has slumped down onto the valley floor below.

A landslide may also be responsible for the dark patch in this image, which appears to pool like spilt ink across the debris. It is most likely loose dust that has slid down the walls, perhaps helped along where melting ice or ground-water weakened the rocks to create a flow-like feature. A similar feature is visible at the opposite end of the mound.

Other landslide deposits are seen all over the floor of Hebes Chasma, many coming from the main canyon walls. Numerous grooves are etched into both the canyon walls and the mesa, suggesting the material is weak and easily eroded.

In a second perspective view, a thin band of darker material is seen between two layers of light material. One idea is that the material was blown or slid from the top of the mound and collected on the slopes below. Dark material is also seen around the base of the mesa, which either eroded away from the younger sediment layers located higher up in the mesa, or were deposited separately by wind or water.

Other layers revealed in the sides of the mesa may also have been deposited by water. Data from both Mars Express and NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter reveal that some parts of Hebes Chasma are laced with minerals that can form only in the presence of water, suggesting that at some point in the Red Planet’s history the canyon might have been filled with a lake.

However, it is apparent from the chaotic debris that fills the canyon floor that enormous landslides have also played a key role in shaping and widening this deep scar since its formation.

Wenger prepared to spend big

Arsene Wenger: Always looking to bring top talent into Arsenal
Arsene Wenger: Always looking to bring top talent into Arsenal

Arsene Wenger is prepared to make more big-money moves at Arsenal, but will also persevere with youth development.
The Gunners boss broke with tradition over the summer as he secured the signature of Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid in a club record deal.
Wenger has favoured a more prudent approach to player recruitment in the past, with one eye forever locked on the future - both on and off the field.
He insists nothing has changed, with plenty of emphasis still being placed on the work of a famed academy system, but the Frenchman also acknowledges that spending is essential if progress is to be made.
Wenger told Arsenal's official website: "The policy is exactly the same - I always want to bring the best players in here, world-class players, at the best possible price.
"And I want to continue to educate 60 to 80 per cent of the squad ourselves. The culture of the club, the way we want to play football and the way we want to behave, comes from within.
"The (Jack) Wilsheres, the (Aaron) Ramseys, the (Kieran) Gibbs - these kind of players have to be the culture of the club.
"Then on top of that, we want to bring world-class players who will help us to be even stronger."

Responsibility

Wenger, who splashed out over £40million on Ozil, added: "It's a big responsibility to spend that amount of money.
"But I feel comfortable with it because we had the money to do it. Before, we couldn't have done it because we didn't have the money available. It's as simple as that.
"I had a huge sense of responsibility when we built the stadium to get the club through it without going bankrupt.
"The first years were difficult, and also explained why we lost some players.
"Now we are in a more comfortable financial position, I - more than anyone - want the great players to play for Arsenal. If we have to spend the money to do that, I will spend the money."

Lewandowski door remains open

Robert Lewandowski: Free to speak to clubs in January
Robert Lewandowski: Free to speak to clubs in January

Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski claims to have no agreement with Bayern Munich and is a fan of the Premier League.
With his current deal set to expire at the end of the season, the Poland international is free to sign pre-contract terms with a new employer in January.
It is possible that Dortmund will look to offload him during the winter window, rather than see him walk away on a free.
Speculation has suggested that a switch to Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich is virtually guaranteed, with both sides having expressed a willingness to work together.
Lewandowski is, however, adamant that nothing has been put in place as yet and admits he would like to play in England at some stage - with Manchester rivals United and City having courted his services in the recent past.
The 25-year-old, who has netted 66 goals in the last two season and nine in nine appearances this term, told the Daily Telegraph: "I will be able to sign a contract in January, but I have never said that I will sign a contract with Bayern.
"It was a misunderstanding. It is true I had the opportunity to speak with Sir Alex Ferguson (last year), but we didn't mention the transfer.
"One day I would like to play in the Premier League. It would be a great experience."
Lewandowski came close to joining Blackburn Rovers in 2010, but Sam Allardyce missed out on his signature as Dortmund stole in to lure him away from Lech Poznan.
He added: "There was a proposal from Blackburn.
"I even spoke with the former manager. In the end, I decided that Dortmund gave me a better chance of development as a footballer."
For now, Lewandowski's focus is locked on the England national side, with Poland due at Wembley on Tuesday for a contest which could see them wreck Roy Hodgson's dream of securing automatic qualification for Brazil 2014.
Lewandowski said: "We know all about this England team and the whole team is very dangerous. As always, we have to watch out for Wayne Rooney. It's not only the task for defenders, but for the whole team, and it will be a very hard match.
"We won't be favourites and we don't stand a chance of going through, but we want to go to Wembley and allow our supporters a little fun.
"I don't know why we have good players at top clubs but we don't have a team who can play ruthless football and kill teams off. In qualification, victories and points are the most important things, not the style of play."

World’s shortest man just 16 inches tall!

World’s shortest man: Master Nau, 73 year old Nepali

If one thinks the world’s shortest man will be chosen among the dwarfs familiar on the streets of Lagos, you have got to think again.

The man who claims the title, is just about four inches taller than a 12-inch ruler.
He is 73 year old Nepali, that still goes by the title of ‘Master’. He is Master Nau, and his name has been etched in the Guinness World Records’ immovable category.

Here, he poses for a photo next to a ruler in Kathmandu.

Nau, who lives with his younger brother’s family in Bhairahawa, 350 kilometres (217 miles) southwest of Kathmandu, is 16 inches tall while his rival, a Taiwanese man, stands 27 inches.
Officials of Guinness World Records have said the man could qualify for the record, according to Thaneshwar Guragain, who is supporting Nau’s claim and corresponding with the organisation.

Nigerian Football Federation reports Ethiopia to FIFA, Ethiopian fans injure Super Eagles midfielder , Keshi plans big for Ethiopia in Calabar

The Nigeria Football Federation Vice President, Chief Mike Umeh has revealed that the unruly attitude of Ethiopian fans to the Nigeria delegation to Sunday’s crunch 2014 1st leg World Cup final playoff match has been reported to the FIFA Security team at the match venue.

Ethiopia were far from being good hosts to the African champions, who arrived in the East African country on the eve of their key clash, which went down at the National Stadium in Addis Ababa and the NFF have thus reported the matter to appropriate authorities with the belief that decisive action will be taken
Telegraph also gathered that aside from reporting to FIFA security team, the Ethiopian Police were also intimated with the ordeal of the Nigerian delegation by Eagles CSO, ACP Baba Abubakar.

Despite not enduring hostilities from Ethiopia, the NFF, on their part, have promised to tow a different line as they plan to give the Wayla Antelopes – as well as the entire delegation from Ethiopia coming for the final leg on November 16, 2013 - the best of Nigerian hospitality.

The return leg match will take place at the UJ Esuene stadium in Calabar, where the Eagles hope to complete the task of qualifying for the Brazil 2014 World Cup after holding a healthy 2-1 advantage from the first leg away from home.

Irate Ethiopian fans, who pelted the Super Eagles bus as they drove away from the National Stadium in Addis Ababa injured Real Betis of Spain midfielder Nosa Igiebor.
Ben Alaiya
Ben Alaiya

According to Ben Alaiya, the Eagles Media Officer, Igiebor suffered a bruise and was bleeding profusely before being promptly attended to by the Eagles team doctor.

“When the Nigerian team was returning to its Saro Maria hotel abode after the game, some fans laid ambush and started hauling stones at the team’s bus. Alaiya began in a press statement made available to Telegraph. He continued, “One of the heavy stones shattered the rear windscreen of the bus, sending all inside the bus scampering for safety.

“With all taking cover, Real Betis star, Nosa Igiebor was the unlucky one as the stone slashed his right palm leading to profuse bleeding that was immediately attended to by team doctor, Ibrahim Gyaran.”
The Eagles ordeal started since they arrived in Addis Ababa as they were given a bus infested with cockroaches but the team took it in its stride.

When it was time for training, the police team attached to the team reportedly took routes that are traffic-jammed, yet the team refused to be intimidated.

Matters came to a head on match day, when all manner of soft drink bottles were hauled at Nigerian players and supporters, when the Ethiopians thought that they had scored an opener in the first half. Television replays later showed that Godfrey Oboabona cleared the ball off the line.

Keshi plans big for Ethiopia in Calabar

Super Eagles boss, Stephen Okechukwu Keshi says the team will play as if it had not played a first leg encounter when the team clashes with Ethiopia on November 16, in the Canaan City of Calabar, Cross River state.

Speaking after his side’s 2-1 win over Ethiopia in Addis Ababa over the weekend, Keshi said he was not disappointed by the gritty display of the host and praised the resilience of his players in rebuffing them.
“The Ethiopians were very good and tactical and that shows how good their coach is, but we were the more experienced side and it showed at the end of the day.”

The coach said the impact of the Eagles’ second half substitutes was massive as it had immediate impact on the match and eventually gave the team the upper hand.

In a similar vein, Bolton White Apartments where the team has been quartering through its qualifiers and even before its Nations Cup win at SA 2013 has sent a heart-warming congratulations to the Super Eagles even as it urged the team to finish up the job in Calabar on November 16.

General Manager of the apartment, John Essien said in a letter to Keshi dated October 14, 2013, that following the victory in Addis Ababa, its hotel can now be aptly dubbed “Champions Camp Hotel”, while Calabar should conveniently answer the “Winning City”

Eagles Were Just Lucky — Ex Players

Despite Nigeria’s Super Eagles recording an away victory over the Walya Ibex of Ethiopia in the final playoffs of the Brazil 2014 World Cup qualifier decided Sunday in Addis Ababa, two Nigerian former internationals, Henry Nwosu, MON and Ademola Adeshina believe the Eagles were just lucky to have won the crucial match.

Fernabache of Turkey based Emmanuel Emenike scored twice for the Super Eagles to silence the hosts who took the lead in the 57th minute. The ex-internationals are of the view that the East Africans would have created an upset, if their attackers were clinical in front of goal.

Nwosu, while reacting to Eagles’ victory which gives Nigeria an edge over Ethiopia going into the reverse fixture in Calabar on 16 November, said that the Nigerian team should thank their stars for coming out unscathed in the tie.

Nwosu, who was recently appointed Chief Coach of Gateway Football Club of Abeokuta, said the Ethiopians gave the Eagles a run for their money, “Ethiopia gave us a good fight and they made us sweat for our win. Though we’ll surely beat them in Calabar, we still have a lot of work to do. The second leg will not be easy because the Ethiopians are a very good side. We shouldn’t celebrate yet until we have qualified for the World Cup.”

Adeshina on his part said there was no synergy between the midfield and the defence of the Eagles, adding that it was lack of understanding in the team that allowed the Ethiopians to have easy access into the Eagles’ vital area.

“The Ethiopians were just unlucky because they created so many scoring chances but they failed to utilise them. This led to them falling at home,” he said.

Meanwhile coach of the Ethiopians, Sewnet Bishaw, has insisted that Nigeria did not deserve to win the tie.
Bishaw disclosed shortly after the match that his team was the better side during the encounter.
He said he did not understand why the centre referee disallowed a goal when the ball had crossed the line before it was cleared by Super Eagles’ defender Godfrey Oboabona.

“Nigeria is a big country and we respect Nigeria, but Nigeria didn’t deserve to win the match.
“We were far better than the Nigerian Eagles, but the referee denied us the opportunity that could have changed the game for us. So, we are not happy.

“Why did we get this kind of poor officiating for a game as big as this? We played our game and my boys were very good, but the referee spoiled it for us,’’ Bishaw told the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN.
Bishaw, however, said he was hopeful the second leg game would end in their favour as the Eagles had succeeded in escaping with victory in Addis Ababa.

Projecting into the outcome of the reverse fixture Bishaw said “In the second leg in Nigeria, the Eagles will not be so lucky because we have understood their game and we will definitely be there in Calabar for a payback.
“The officiating w
as really poor and the whole of Ethiopia is not happy. You can see how they left the stadium disappointed,” he added.

 GUS Contestants Divided Into Tribes

As this year’s edition of Gulder Ultimate Search, the contestants of the show are not staying in a single camp. Besides, the tradition of contestants building their camp as their first task was broken as the contestants had to form two tribes each and stay in different camps – Red camp and Yellow camp.

One Tribe would be known as The Swords and the other The Spears. They also had to perform a task to determine which particular location in the jungle each tribe would stay.

To know which tribe each contestant belonged to, the Warriors had to ‘Dig For Tribes’. Twelve boxes were buried underneath a swampy field and each contestant had to dig up a box which contained either a yellow or red object.

The members of the Swords are: Edmond Umebuani, Ezidi Bobby Nzube, Sheidu Onozare Halima, Chapele Tracy, Salako Oladimeji Olukunle and Mary Adeboye. The Spears consist of: Okike Dennis, Brosu Anthony, Ifunanya Onike Michelle, Ijeh Peter Oseleka, Etido Ema Ebong and Martha Adeboye.
Ezugo Egwagwu, winner of Gulder Ultimate Search 1 and Dominic Mudabai, winner of Gulder Ultimate Search 4, were unveiled as Gatekeepers.

They were to pick a Tribe and motivate and guide them to win as many tasks as possible. The Gatekeepers each tossed a coin to choose the tribes they would mentor.

Ezugo picked the Spear Tribe which had lost their game the previous day. He reasoned that he could make winners out of them.

Dominic went for Swords Tribe which he had described as the winning team. The Spears won the second challenge against the Swords tagged Get the Food’.

The Swords won the third next three challenges: the Fruit Juice and Leaf challenge; The Pyramid and Building Blocks. In the Fruit Juice and Leaf challenge, Mary Adeboye was pitched against her identical twin Martha; and the former outsmarted the latter. Both had made it clear that they would jettison the spirit of kinship and battle each other for The 10th Symbol.

Man eats daughter’s flesh, drinks her blood

A Papua New Guinea described as a vampire has been arrested after allegedly murdering his young by biting neck, eating and drinking , a report said Friday.
Police called the grisly incident that occurred on Wednesday at a settlement near Lae “an act of cannibalism”.
The PNG Post Courier cited local councillor John Kenny, who was one of the first on the scene, as saying the three-year-old child and her mother were visiting the
286217_674515505906882_536573238_o
father when he grabbed the girl and ran off into nearby bushes.
Kenny said the man allegedly held the toddler close to him, bit deep into her neck, ate the flesh and sucked her blood.
Two boys who were climbing a coconut tree nearby saw him and ran quickly to raise the alarm.
“He was just laughing at the boys and continued eating the flesh and sucking the blood,” Kenny told the newspaper.
“The boys were scared and ran quickly to alert the people.

When people arrived to investigate the man reportedly dumped the body in the bushes and ran away before being caught and turned over to police.

PNG is a sprawling nation where black magic, sorcery and cannibalism sometimes occur.
Last year police arrested dozens of people linked to an alleged cannibal cult accused of killing at least seven people, eating their brains raw and making soup from their penises.

There have been several other recent cases linked to cults, witchcraft and cannibalism, with a man in 2011 reportedly found eating his screaming, newborn son during a sorcery initiation ceremony.

Ethiopia-Nigeria encounter promises enticing end to qualification

The Walya Antelopes may be unfancied heading into their World Cup play-off encounter with the Super Eagles on Sunday but Stephen Keshi's men would do well not to underestimate them

Nigeria have lost just once in seven games to Ethiopia

Nigeria are looking forward to the World Cup qualifying double-header against Ethiopia with cautious optimism. The Super Eagles may possess a multi-talented group of players, but they will be acutely aware of the threats posed by the Walya Antelopes.

The visitors to Addis Ababa are ranked 36th in the world and fourth in Africa, with Ethiopia a distant 93rd in the Fifa ranking and 25th in the continental hierarchy. On paper, the gulf in class is colossal, but the Antelopes are an emerging force in African football. The East African side qualified for the last Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa after a 31-year absence and finished top of their World Cup qualifying group ahead of Bafana Bafana, even after being docked three points for fielding an ineligible player.

The Antelopes, coached by Sewnet Bishaw, are known for their slick passing and the high pressing game they exhibited at the last Afcon. However, the relative inexperience of the side might just be their undoing against a vastly talented Nigerian outfit who are, let us not forget, the reigning African champions. The Ethiopians, with their squad predominantly based in the nation’s top flight, may struggle against the diverse array of superstars that Stephen Keshi can call upon.

The two teams have met seven times before, with Nigeria winning four of those matches. Ethiopia recorded a famous victory against the Super Eagles in a 1994 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, while two further fixtures have ended in draws.

The two countries first locked horns at the 1982 Afcon in Libya, where Nigeria defeated Ethiopia 3-0. The current Super Eagles coach, the aforementioned Keshi, grabbed a double on that eventful day. Ademola Adeshina also found the net.
\

The second meeting was an international friendly at the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, in 1993 which the Eagles won by a goal to nil.

The sole Ethiopian victory was a 1-0 triumph on home soil in April 1993.

High-flyers| Victor Moses helps Super Eagles overcome Ethiopia in Afcon
The next meeting was on July 24, 1993, in the return leg of a 1994 Nations Cup qualifier when Nigeria thrashed the East Africans 6-0 with the late Rashidi 'Yeking' Yekini scoring a hat-trick in a thrilling game that also marked the international debut of Sunday Oliseh. Ethiopia’s one brief revolution against the established order was quashed swiftly and emphatically by Clemens Westerhof and his troops.

During the 2012 Nations Cup qualifiers, Nigeria secured a 2-2 draw in Addis Abba. Ethiopia striker Saladin Said scored two and it took a very late equaliser from captain Joseph Yobo to salvage a point on the road for the Super Eagles in what was a feisty encounter.

Nigeria thumped Ethiopia by four goals in the return leg at the Abuja National Stadium. Peter Utaka and Ike Uche bagged two goals apiece in an imperious performance by the West Africans.

The Eagles put in a less-than-convincing performance in the last meeting between the two sides, but even that concluded with a 2-0 win for Nigeria at the 2013 Afcon in South Africa. Victor Moses scored twice from the penalty spot to ensure progress to the last eight of the tournament which the Super Eagles eventually won.

The final 15 minutes of that fixture, as Moses’ searing pace, sublime dribbling and unruffled finishing turned the tide Nigeria’s way and sent the Super Eagles on their way to a glorious continental triumph.
The next episode in this storied rivalry will be the much-anticipated first-leg of the play-off, billed for October 13 in Addis Ababa, while the second leg is due to take place in Calabar on November 16 in front of a partisan U.J Esuene crowd.

If history is anything to go by, Nigeria winning the tie over two legs looks a likely proposition. However, in the end, the tables might just turn in favour of either team through a moment of magic or a flash of genius. The only certain thing is that two enthralling 90 minutes of football lie in store for the fervent football fans of Africa.

Ozil hits back over Real Madrid criticism

The Arsenal star had his attitude called into question by the Spanish club's president, Florentino Perez, but wants to draw a line under the spat after underlining his credentials

Ozil hits back over Real Madrid criticism

Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil has defended his record at Real Madrid after the Spanish club's president questioned his mentality.

Florentino Perez claimed that the 24-year-old had requested his deadline-day switch to the Premier League as he "could not stand the pressure of Madrid".

However, the Germany international wants to draw a line under the issue, stating that he was happy with his contribution during his stay at Santiago Bernabeu.

"First of all, I had three wonderful years in Madrid, I don't want to add anything on that. I am now at Arsenal and very happy," Ozil told the press.

"If you see my figures [in Madrid] and how many matches I played there, then you can also see my professionalism. I don't want to say more about it."

Ozil has made a flying start to life at Arsenal, assisting five goals in six games to help Arsene Wenger's men move to the top of the Premier League and Champions League Group F.

"For me, personally, the Premier League is the strongest, it is well balanced. You have many top-class clubs," the midfielder enthused.

"I think it's a nice experience to play abroad. You get to learn a new culture and new language, you improve a lot as a person. That's why I am happy to have another new experience in England. I really think this league will suit me well."
